Bu isim pek çoğunuza yabancı gelebilir. Belki de hiç duymamışta olabilirsiniz. Eski adı Bombay olan Mumbai, 1995 yılına kadar Bombay olarak biliniyordu. Hindistan’ın Maharaştra eyaletinin başkenti olan Mumbai ’de, bazı kaynaklara göre 13 milyon, bazı kaynaklara göre 20 milyon yaşamaktadır. Bu nüfusuyla Hindistan’ın en büyük kenti olmakla birlikte, dünyanın en kalabalık şehirleri arasındadır. Antik çağlardan bu yana en eski yerleşimlerden biri olan Mumbai 16. yüzyılda Portekizliler tarafından işgal edildikten sonra Portekizcede iyi körfez anlamına gelen “Bom Bahia” adını vermişler. Daha sonraki yıllarda İngiliz sömürgesi haline gelmesinin ardından Bombay olarak anılan şehrin ismi en sonunda Hint Tanrısı Mumba’dan türetilerek Mumbai halini almıştır. Bu bağlamda oluşan Mumbai kültürü oldukça kozmopolit bir karışım olarak karşımıza çıkıyor. Hindistan’ın en önemli limanı yine bu kentte bulunuyor. Fakat kentin tamamında zenginlik ya da ihtişam bulmak mümkün değil. Hindistan’ın geneline hakim büyük bir fakirlik ve geri kalmışlık Mumbai’nin en büyük sorunu. Fakat yine de her yıl binlerce insanın ziyaret ettiği bir şehirde illaki tarihi mekânlara ilgi duyanların merakla inceleyeceği birçok eser bulmak mümkün. Ayrıca bu mağaralarda bulunan eserler Unesco’nun Dünya Kültür Mirası listesinde bulunuyor. Hemen belirtelim; bu mağaraların bulunduğu adaya yaklaşık 1 Saat’te gidiliyor.
