Astropikal iklime sahip bu güzel coğrafya, irili ufaklı 700 kadar adadan ve 2400 civarında çıplak kayalıktan oluşuyor. Ve günümüzde Bahama Milletler topluluğu olarak varlığını sürdürüyor. Bahamalar ismini İspanyolca`da sığ deniz anlamına gelen Bajamar’dan alıyor. Ülkeyi ilk keşfeden Kristof KOLOMB, bu adalara çıktığında Aravak yerlileriyle karşılaşmıştı ve buraya Lucayan adını vermişti. Fakat geçimini tarım ve balıkçılık yaparak sürdüren son derece barışçıl bu zavallı yerliler, ilerleyen yıllarda İspanyollar tarafından her türlü ağır işte çalıştırılmak üzere köle yapılmış ve pek çoğu bu ağır şartlarda hayatını kaybetmiştir.

Bahama adaları kültürü ve güzellikleriyle dünya üzerindeki en gözde turistik yerler arasında sayılıyor. Coğrafi olarak Amerikan ülkesi olan Bahamalar Haiti, Dominik, Küba ve ABD arasında bulunuyor. Önce İspanyolların, sonrada İngilizlerin sömürgesi olan ülke 1973 yılında bağımsızlığını kazanmış. Fakat İngiliz Milletler Topluluğu’na üye olarak bugün ki halini almıştır. Bahamalar’ın en büyük adası Nassau aynı zamanda ülkenin başkentidir. Ülkenin para birimi Bahama doları ve ABD doları olmak üzere her ikisi de kullanılabiliyor. Fakat hemen belirtelim; ABD doları ile alışveriş yapmanız yararınıza olur. Çünkü tatil dönüşü Bahama dolarını başka hiç bir yerde başka para birimlerine çeviremezsiniz.

Öncelikle belirtmemiz gerekirse Türkiye’den direk Bahamalar’a gidemiyorsunuz. Miami veya İngiltere aktarmalı uçak yolculuğuyla yaklaşık 13 saat sürüyor.. Bunun dışında başta İstanbul İzmir veya Kuşadası’ndan okyanus aşırı büyük yolcu gemileriyle ulaşmakta mümkün. Fakat gemi yolculuğunun oldukça uzun sürdüğünü dikkate almanız gerekiyor. İyi tatiller.
